HausWerks was originally hired to design a master suite addition for the rear of the home, and to redesign the garage. Study of the home revealed many opportunities to gain space by demolishing interior walls and making minor adjustments that turned hallways into living space, and created functional rooms that address the specific day-to-day needs of this family.

Gone is the second front door, whose position close to the driveway led most visitors to enter the home through the laundry room. In its place is a breakfast nook adjacent to the kitchen that is designed to accommodate arts and crafts, next to a niche for cubbies – that all important area that allows a quick exit with all items needed on the way to school in the morning. To accommodate mom and dad, the home also boasts a “technology niche” in the master bedroom – a HausWerks specialty – which allows all of today’s handheld technology to be stored, charged and reloaded out of the reach of little hands.

The home now has a clear division between public and private space, with a hallway transition to a huge master suite that incorporates a fitness area, sitting area, and dressing room in addition to the bed and bath. The master is designed to allow maximum light  - with a pop up ceiling and floor to ceiling windows into the private back yard, allowing the couple to enjoy her gardening skills  The front entry as well was redesigned to add emphasis and provide welcome, while the living room was opened up through the new media room to provide more views to the garden. The entire home now appears as a cohesive whole, with a definite style.

Gone also is the flagstone terrace, which was demolished to allow the creation of a media/play room with adjoining office. This soaring two-story space allows light to enter the room from all sides through clerestory windows. The location also recognizes the owner’s desire to pursue her graphic design specialty while providing appropriate supervision for her children in their most desired play area. The house is wired for an IPOD based music server and speakers, reflecting the owner’s preference.

The new layout transformed the home from a nominal three bedroom 3 bath to a full four bedroom 4 bath home. In addition the changes allowed HausWerks to address the failing HVAC system, which was replaced with 2 zoned systems. Last but not least, the home now has a large family dining room with a half barrel vault ceiling which catches light from additional clerestory windows. The dining room looks out onto a screen porch and deck, furthering the interior exterior connection.
